Poor Man’s Cocaine
A drug enforcement official testified before Congress about the effects of ADHD drugs and cited studies on both animals and humans who were given cocaine and Ritalin. The test subjects could not tell the difference between the two. The official concluded that, “They produce effects that are nearly identical.”
Ritalin, Adderall and similar drugs are easy to get, and they are inexpensive. Pills are often taken from someone’s prescription, stolen or obtained fraudulently, then sold for $1 to $20 each.
As these drugs are stimulants, they are chemically similar to cocaine. When injected as a liquid, they deliver a powerful rush that addicts crave.
Test subjects who were given cocaine and Ritalin could not tell the difference.
